Seasonal (Spring) Easy to Fix Low Cost 30-120 Minutes
← Back to Overview
Problem: After winter storage, the Automower won't start, the battery won't charge, error messages appear, or the mower behaves strangely. Often mistakes were made during storage that now lead to problems.

Problem Description

After winter storage, the Automower won't start, the battery won't charge, error messages appear, or the mower behaves strangely. Often mistakes were made during storage that now lead to problems. Incorrect winterization is a common cause of defects.

Affected Models: All models

Possible Causes

  1. Battery deeply discharged due to incorrect storage – Most common cause after winter
  2. Moisture in electronics – Storage in damp garden shed
  3. Corroded contacts – Charging contacts dirty or oxidized
  4. Firmware problems after long standby – Software needs reinitialization
  5. Frost damage – Storage below 0°C

Step-by-Step Solutions

Solution 1: Basic Cleaning After Winter

Time Required: 30-45 minutes

  1. Remove the mower from winter storage
  2. Clean thoroughly with brush and cloth:
    • Housing
    • Wheels
    • Cutting deck
    Charging contacts (very important!)
  3. Check for damage:
    • Cables
    • Housing (cracks?)
    • Wheels (tread?)
    • Blades
  4. Change the blades (even if visually OK)
  5. Clean the charging contacts with contact spray
Tools Needed: Brush, microfiber cloth, contact spray (electrical contact spray), new blades incl. screws
Clean Charging Contacts: The charging contacts are often the cause of charging problems after winter. Clean them with contact spray and a soft cloth. Carefully remove verdigris and oxidation.

Solution 2: Reactivate Battery

Time Required: 24-48 hours

For deeply discharged battery:

  1. Place the mower in the charging station
  2. Let it charge for 24-48 hours (even if display remains dark)
  3. Modern batteries have protection circuits – reactivation can take time
  4. If nothing happens after 48 hours: Battery is possibly defective
  5. Test the charging process by feeling (charging station/battery gets warm)
Avoid Deep Discharge: A deeply discharged battery can be permanently damaged. That's why it's so important to store the mower fully charged and recharge every 2-3 months!

Solution 3: Reset Software

Time Required: 5-10 minutes

  1. After successful charging: Perform factory reset
  2. Reset time and date
  3. Reprogram the schedule
  4. Test the mower on a small area
  5. If everything works: Use normally

Checklist for Correct Winterization (for next year)

Preparation (Autumn):

  • Thorough cleaning of entire mower
  • Clean charging contacts
  • Fully charge battery (100%!)
  • Store in dry, frost-free location (5-25°C)
  • Disconnect charging station from power
  • Boundary wire can stay in ground

Storage:

  • Recharge battery every 2-3 months
  • Store dry (garage, basement – not garden shed!)
  • Never store below 0°C
  • Protect from rodents (martens, mice)

When Should You Consult a Professional?

If the battery doesn't respond after 48 hours of charging, it's probably defective and must be replaced. With electronics damage from moisture, only a specialist can help. A service appointment at the dealer is recommended before the season. We offer spring service including battery check.

Preventive Measures

  • Always store battery fully charged in winter – 100% charge before storage
  • Recharge every 2 months (even in winter!) – Prevents deep discharge
  • Dry, frost-free storage – Garage or basement, 5-25°C
  • Clean thoroughly before storage – Removes moisture and dirt
  • Annual inspection at dealer – Before season start
  • Maintain charging contacts – Treat with contact spray
Pro Tip: Set calendar alarms for January and March to recharge the battery. It only takes 2 hours and prevents deep discharge. Most winter damage occurs from forgotten recharging – not from cold!
