Uneven Cut and Lawn Stripes with Automower

Occasional Easy to Fix Low Cost 10-25 Minutes
← Back to Overview
Problem: The lawn is mowed unevenly, grass tufts remain or unsightly stripes appear. Some areas are significantly shorter than others. The mower seems to favor or avoid certain spots.

Problem Description

The lawn is mowed unevenly, grass tufts remain or unsightly stripes appear. Some areas are significantly shorter than others. The mower seems to favor or avoid certain spots. This is usually not due to a defect but to incorrect settings or worn blades.

Affected Models: All models

Possible Causes

  1. Dull or damaged blades (most common cause) – Blades no longer cut properly
  2. Mowing time too short for lawn size – Mower cannot manage the area
  3. Cutting height incorrectly set – Too high or too low for grass type
  4. Different blades installed simultaneously – Imbalance leads to uneven cut
  5. Mower doesn't access certain areas – Settings problem or obstacles

Step-by-Step Solutions

SAFETY: Always wear work gloves when changing blades! The blades are extremely sharp and can cause severe cuts.

Solution 1: Change Blades

Time Required: 10-15 minutes

  1. Turn off the mower and turn it over
  2. Check all 3 blades for:
    • Dull edges
    • Bent blades
    • Damage or cracks
  3. Change ALL 3 blades simultaneously
  4. ALWAYS use new screws when changing blades
  5. Use ONLY the same blade types (no mixing!)
  6. Turn the mower back over and start
Recommended Blade Changes:
• Normal lawn: every 2-3 months
• Rocky terrain: monthly
• Large areas (over 1000 sqm): more frequently
Tools Needed: Allen key (usually 4 mm), work gloves (mandatory!), original blades (3 pieces), new screws (3 pieces)
Important: NEVER reuse old screws! The screws are self-locking and lose their effectiveness after first use. This can lead to loss of blades during operation.

Solution 2: Adjust Mowing Time

Time Required: 5 minutes

  1. Rule of thumb: Mower should run daily
  2. For 500 sqm: at least 8-10 hours daily
  3. For 800 sqm: at least 12-15 hours daily
  4. For 1000+ sqm: Almost continuous operation (18-22 hours)
  5. Increase mowing time gradually until lawn is mowed evenly
  6. Also use weekends for mowing operation
Tip: Most people underestimate the required mowing time! An Automower works on a random principle and needs significantly more time than a traditional lawn mower. Plan generously and increase time rather too much than too little.

Solution 3: Optimize Cutting Height

Time Required: 3-5 minutes

  1. Recommended cutting height: 3-5 cm
  2. After winter restart: Start at 5-6 cm
  3. Reduce by 0.5 cm weekly until target height reached
  4. Use the "Spiral cut" function for tall grass
  5. For uneven growth: Use "TargetHeight" function (if available)
Cutting Height Tips:
• Shade lawn: 4-5 cm (keep higher)
• Play lawn: 3-4 cm (standard)
• Ornamental lawn: 2-3 cm (lower, needs more care)

When Should You Consult a Professional?

If the cut remains uneven despite new blades and correct settings, the blade motor may be weak or the cutting height adjustment defective. There may also be a problem with the cutting disc. We offer professional diagnostics and repair.

Preventive Measures

  • Check blades regularly – Inspect condition at least monthly
  • Change blades in time – Don't wait for total wear
  • Always change all 3 blades simultaneously – Prevents imbalance
  • Use new screws – With every blade change
  • Run mower daily – For even results
  • Remove stones from lawn – Severely damage blades
  • Adjust cutting height seasonally – Slightly higher in summer
Pro Tip: Mark blade changes in your calendar! Change blades e.g. always on the 1st of every other month (March 1, May 1, July 1, etc.). This way you won't forget and your lawn will always look perfect. A complete set of original blades costs only a few euros and makes a huge difference.
