Problem Description

The Automower doesn't drive at all, only in circles, or one wheel doesn't turn. The error message "Does not drive" or "Drive problem" is displayed. The cutting system still works, but the mower doesn't move from the spot. This can have mechanical or electrical causes.

Affected Models: All models

Possible Causes

  1. Wheel motor or gearbox defective – Motor no longer turns or gearbox broken
  2. Belt worn (older models) – Drive belt broken or stretched
  3. Wheels blocked by dirt – Grass, strings, or stones blocking wheels
  4. Electrical problem on motherboard – MOSFET or other components defective
  5. Drive wheel worn or damaged – Tread worn, no grip anymore

Step-by-Step Solutions

Solution 1: Clean Wheels and Drive

Time Required: 10-15 minutes

  1. Turn off the mower
  2. Turn it over or place on its side
  3. Turn each wheel manually – it should turn easily
  4. Remove grass residue, strings, and dirt from wheels
  5. Clean axles and drive area thoroughly
  6. Check tires for damage or wear
  7. Test the mower
Common Blockages: Are there strings or hair wrapped around the axle? This is extremely common! Small stones can also get jammed between wheel and chassis and block movement.

Solution 2: Test Wheel Motors

Time Required: 5-10 minutes

For models with service menu:

  1. Go to service menu (instructions in manual)
  2. Select "Wheel motor test"
  3. Test left and right wheel individually
  4. If a wheel doesn't turn or is weak: Wheel motor defective
  5. Note which motor is affected (left or right)
Service Menu Access: For most models: Stop button → enter 0-0-0 → OK. For newer models via app: More → Settings → Diagnostics. Consult your manual for the exact procedure.
Known Problem with 315: The Automower 315 has a known problem with the wheel motor gearbox. If your 315 no longer turns one wheel, the gearbox is probably defective. This was a warranty case for many devices.

Solution 3: Replace Drive Wheels

Time Required: 20-40 minutes

For heavily worn tires:

  1. Get replacement drive wheels for your model
  2. Turn off the mower and turn it over
  3. Loosen the wheel mounting screw
  4. Carefully pull off the wheel
  5. Place the new wheel on the axle
  6. Screw tight (not too tight!)
  7. Repeat for second wheel if needed
Tools Needed: Screwdriver or Allen key (depending on model), brush for cleaning, original replacement wheels
When to Change Wheels? When the tread is heavily worn and the mower slips on smooth grass or slopes. The wheels should still have clear tread. If unsure: Compare with new wheels.

When Should You Consult a Professional?

Defective wheel motors or gearboxes must be professionally replaced. This often requires special tools and experience. Electrical problems on the motherboard (MOSFET defect) can only be repaired by professionals. With warranty: Contact dealer! We offer professional diagnosis and repair of drive problems.

Preventive Measures

  • Check wheels regularly – Inspect for cleanliness and condition
  • Replace drive wheels in time – Don't wait when wear is visible
  • Avoid extreme slopes – Stay within manufacturer specifications
  • Don't overload wheels – Don't let it drive through extremely tall grass
  • Clean axles regularly – Prevents blockages
  • Keep garden free of strings – No clotheslines, garden hoses in mowing area
Pro Tip: Lift the mower once a month and turn the wheels manually. They should turn easily and smoothly. If a wheel is stiff or makes strange noises, that's an early warning sign of problems. Better clean now than replace the motor later!
