Problem: The error messages "Upside down", "Turned over", "Lifted" or "Alarm! Mower lifted" appear. The mower stops working and an alarm may sound. Sometimes the error occurs even though the mower is on level ground.

Problem Description

The error messages "Upside down", "Turned over", "Lifted" or "Alarm! Mower lifted" appear. The mower stops working and an alarm may sound. This is a safety function that triggers when the lift sensors or tilt sensor are activated. Sometimes the error occurs even though the mower is on level ground.

Affected Models: All models, especially older 220AC, 230ACX

Possible Causes

  1. Mower was actually lifted (transport, cleaning) – Normal safety function
  2. Mower drove over obstacle – Toys, branches, apples, or other objects
  3. Slope too steep in work area – Tilt sensor is triggered
  4. Defective lift sensor – Shows error even on level ground
  5. Defective tilt sensor – Reports false inclination

Step-by-Step Solutions

Solution 1: Normal Operation After Lifting

Time Required: 1 minute

  1. Place the mower on level ground
  2. Enter the PIN code
  3. Restart the mower
  4. If error occurred after carrying/cleaning: Everything normal – this is the safety function
Important: This message is an intended safety function! It prevents the mower from being carried with rotating blades and protects against theft. An alarm is normal depending on settings.

Solution 2: Optimize Work Area

Time Required: Variable, 10-30 minutes

  1. Remove objects from the mowing area (toys, branches, fallen fruit)
  2. Create an island around tree roots or trampoline legs
  3. Check the slope with a spirit level
  4. Observe maximum slope depending on model:
    • Standard models (305, 310): 20-25%
    • X models (315, 320, 420, 430X): 35-45%
    • AWD models (435X AWD): up to 70%
  5. For slopes that are too steep: Exclude with boundary wire
Common Cause: Fallen fruit like apples, pears, or plums! These are driven over by the mower and trigger the lift sensor. Remove fallen fruit regularly, especially in autumn.

Solution 3: Replace Lift Sensor (for Advanced Users)

Time Required: 30-60 minutes

ONLY if error occurs even though mower is on level ground:

  1. Turn off the mower
  2. Remove the housing cover
  3. Locate the defective lift sensor (usually under the chassis, front or rear)
  4. Remove the mounting screws (usually Allen 4 mm)
  5. Carefully disconnect the connector
  6. Insert the new sensor
  7. Connect the plug
  8. Re-secure the sensor
  9. Remount the housing
  10. No programming necessary – just start
Tools Needed: Allen key 4 mm, PolyGrip or pliers, original replacement lift sensor
Tip: Most Automowers have 2-4 lift sensors (front, rear, sometimes sides). If the error occurs frequently, note which position the mower is in – this helps identify the defective sensor.

When Should You Consult a Professional?

If the error occurs frequently without apparent reason, there may be a sensor defect. Replacement is not technically very demanding but requires basic knowledge. For uncertainties or if multiple sensors are affected, workshop service is advisable. We offer professional sensor diagnostics and replacement with original spare parts.

Preventive Measures

  • Keep garden tidy – Remove toys, tools, and objects from mowing area
  • Remove fallen fruit regularly – Especially in autumn under fruit trees
  • Observe slopes – Stay within manufacturer specifications
  • Be careful when transporting – Carry mower securely (not by housing)
  • Protect sensors – Don't clean directly with pressure washer
  • Isolate tree roots – Create islands around problem areas
Pro Tip: When you need to transport the mower, always carry it by the chassis (lower part), not by the housing (upper part). The housing is movable and can trigger the lift sensors. Best: Use the carrying handle if available.
