Problem Description

The boundary wire is damaged, usually by garden work like scarifying, digging, or lawn edging. The charging station shows "No loop signal" with a flashing blue LED. The mower cannot work anymore. The challenge is finding the break in a wire that's often several hundred meters long.

Affected Models: All wired models

Possible Causes

  1. Scarifying or aerating (most common cause) – Device set too deep
  2. Spade cut while planting – Accidentally cutting through the wire
  3. Lawn edger – Cuts wire at the lawn edge
  4. Animals gnawed on wire – Martens, mice, or rats
  5. Wire laid too shallow – Caught during mowing

Step-by-Step Solutions

Solution 1: Roughly Locate Wire Break

Time Required: 20-40 minutes

Method with AM Radio Receiver or Wire Detector:

  1. Disconnect the loop at the charging station
  2. Connect one end to AL, the other to AR (= open loop)
  3. Turn on the search device and walk along the wire
  4. The signal breaks at the damaged spot
  5. Mark the spot with a flag
Wire Detectors: There are special Automower wire detectors (approx. 50-150 EUR) or you can use a simple AM radio. The radio searches for the electromagnetic field of the wire and becomes quieter/silent at the break point.

Method Without Device (for the Patient):

  1. Consider where garden work was done recently
  2. Typical break points:
    • Driveway/access road
    • Lawn edges
    • Areas that were scarified
    • Bed transitions
  3. Carefully dig at suspicious spots
  4. Check the wire for continuity with a multimeter

Solution 2: Repair Wire

Time Required: 30-60 minutes

IMPORTANT: Never just twist wires together! This doesn't work permanently and leads to corrosion. ALWAYS use original Husqvarna wire connectors.
  1. Dig out the wire at the break (approx. 20-30 cm)
  2. Cut out the damaged section generously (at least 5 cm on each side)
  3. Use original Husqvarna wire connectors (waterproof!)
  4. Connect the ends according to instructions:
    • Strip wire (5-7 mm)
    • Insert into connector
    • Press firmly until click
  5. Check at charging station: LED should light green
  6. Bury the wire again (1-3 cm deep)
Tools Needed: Spade or hand trowel, original Husqvarna wire connectors, wire strippers or cutter, multimeter (optional), wire detector (optional)
Why Original Connectors? Original Husqvarna wire connectors are waterproof and gel-filled. Cheap alternatives (terminal blocks, Wago connectors) don't work in soil – they corrode within a few weeks.

When Should You Consult a Professional?

For wire breaks in the middle of the lawn without apparent cause or multiple breaks, a professional wire detector is necessary. Specialists can locate breaks with centimeter precision. For large-scale damage, complete reinstallation may be needed. We offer professional wire detection and repair service.

Preventive Measures

  • Secure wire with lawn pegs – Every 75-100 cm, prevents shifting
  • Correct installation depth – 1-3 cm deep (NOT deeper than 5 cm!)
  • Document wire layout – Draw on garden plan or photograph
  • Mark layout before garden work – Make visible with flags
  • Check wire connectors – Inspect for tightness every 2 years
  • Set scarifier correctly – Never work deeper than 5 mm
  • Edge carefully – Wire often lies directly at the edge
Pro Tip: Take photos of the wire layout after installation and save them. Mark distinctive points (e.g., "2 meters right of apple tree"). During repairs, you'll save hours of searching. Especially important for complex gardens with many islands and passages.
